Compliance

Registration is compulsory for all persons, firms and organizations wishing to offer engineering services in Jamaica.

Definition of Engineering.

The "practice of engineering" includes the carrying out of chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, geological, mechanical, metallurgical, mining, structural or any other disciplines of engineering designated by the PERB and of which university programmes have been accredited by the University Council of Jamaica or any other body recognized by PERB. 

Engineers design, evaluate, develop, test, modify, install, inspect, and maintain a wide variety of infrastructure, public utilities, products and systems. They also recommend and specify materials and processes, supervise manufacturing and construction, conduct failure analysis, provide consulting services, and teach engineering courses in colleges and universities.

Who is a Registered Professional Engineer?

The PERA defines a "registered engineer" as a person registered under the Act, who is qualified to render service or work which requires education at the tertiary level, training and experience in the field of engineering and the application of knowledge in the mathematical, physical and applied sciences.

 

 

What are important skills for an engineer?

Engineers possess the experience and technical knowledge as require by or under the Professional Engineers Registration Act for the admission by examination to registration in the profession, and without limitation, include reporting on, designing or directing the construction of public utilities, industrial works, railways, bridges, highways, canals, harbour works, river improvements. wet docks, dry docks floating docks launch ways, marine ways, steam engines, turbines, pumps, internal combustion engines, electrical machinery and apparatus, production operations and systems, machinery, and works for the development, transmission or application of power, light and heat, grain elevators municipal works, irrigation works, sewage disposal works, drainage works, incinerators, hydraulic works, and all other engineering works, and all building necessary to the proper housing, installation and operation of engineering works, embraced in this definition.
